PENTECOST

The conclusion of the Easter Season, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church. But what does that mean for us individually and collectively here and now?  Well, to allow the promised Holy Spirit to lead us as disciples of Jesus in love and truth.  Ok, how?  By personal and communal prayerful attention to the movement of the Holy Spirit in our lives, in the teaching of the Church founded in Scripture and the living tradition (‘the one deposit of faith’) and in the signs of the times (positive and negative) of wider society.  In other words, we are formed in  community and the Spirit blows where the Spirit will.  The adage of the Young Christian Workers (YCW) is still very pertinent – ‘See, Judge and Act’.  On the Sunday afternoon of 11 August (not 18 August as previously noted) you are invited to be part of a facilitated Parish Assembly in the Parish Centre to consider through prayer and dialogue how we might respond to the Spirit’s movement.  I would invite you to renew your walk in faith and to prepare for this gathering in prayerful silence.  I am not here talking of the widespread practice of ‘mindfulness’ where you listen to yourself.  Rather I am referring to the ancient practice of Christian meditation wherein the Spirit is seeking to affirm and challenge you.  In mindfulness we are the focus.  In Christian meditation we are seeking the will of God for the sake of ongoing transformation.  Listening with the ear of your heart, where is the Spirit calling you to animate your personal relationships, your workplace, your leisure, your discretionary time.  This is not about restricting us but rather allowing us to blossom.  In the parish you might consider sharing your gifts to address current vacancies as a Reader, Commentator, Collection Counter, facilitator of Children’s Liturgy of the Word on Sunday morning, Parish Pastoral Council or Parish Finance Council member, or supplementing other groups, eg, church cleaners, social committee.  Some might be thinking, “Been there, done that”.  Perhaps your greatest gift is discerned wisdom and more time to hold up in prayer any number of matters?  The fact is we are all called at all stages of life.  “Our hearts are restless until they rest in God” (St Augustine).  We all have gifts to receive and gifts to share for our personal and communal growth in holiness and wholeness.  Happy Birthday!

Fr John

Reflection

If not us,

Who?

If not here,

Where?

If not now,

When?

If not for

The Kingdom,

Why?

Dare the dream.
