History

St. Edmund’s Roman Catholic Church was built in 1885 by Laidley Mort for his wife Mary so that she and the many Roman Catholic workers of the estate would have a place for services.  The architect was John Horbury Hunt.  The church was built in the memory of Mary’s older brother Lt. Col. Robert Charles Coveny who was killed in the Egyptian Campaign on 10 February 1885…The original kerosene lights are still in the church on brackets attached to the walls.  The finished church was blessed by Cardinal Moran on 2 February 1886.http://eurobodalla.com.au/things-to-see-and-do/history-heritage/towns-our-heritage/bodalla/
