IN THANKSGIVING FOR ARCHBISHOP FRANCIS CARROLL

Archbishop Francis Carroll, the fifth Archbishop of our Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn died in Calvary Hospital, Wagga on Thursday morning, aged 93 (9.9.1930 - 14.3.2024).  May he rest in peace to rise in Easter glory.  The Australian Church and wider community give thanks for the servant leadership of this faithful man of God.  Born in Ganmain, NSW, he maintained a love of the land and its people.  He completed his schooling as a boarder at De La Salle, Marrickville.  His seminary formation was at St. Columba’s, Springwood and St Patrick’s, Manly, being ordained on 27 July 1954.  He undertook canon law studies in Rome during the Second Vatican Council.  At age 36 he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Wagga in and installed as Bishop of Wagga in 1968.  Fifteen years later he was appointed Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn, retiring after 23 years (1983 – 2006), and returning to Wagga.  Archbishop Francis, or Fr Francis as he preferred, was a humble somewhat shy yet gifted man.  He had a major influence in securing ‘state aid’ for Catholic schools and in the establishment of the National Catholic Education Commission (1974), as a member of the International Catechetical Council (1974-1992), Australian representative at the Synod which led to the seminal document on catechetics Catechesi Tradendae (1974), not forgetting his terms as President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference (2000-2006), the latter reflecting the esteem of his episcopal colleagues.  His self-effacing manner saw him develop many long-standing friendships with all manner of people.  Father Francis had a heart for the marginalized.  He was at home in the Kairos prison ministry and revered by many in the Aboriginal community.  He was very much a man of the Second Vatican Council, mindful of the rich tradition we build on in addressing the challenges of our day.  His episcopal motto, ‘Nova et Vetera’ (‘Things New and Old’) reflected this, as did his calling in 1989 of the first Diocesan Synod in Australia since Vatican 11, and doing so again in 2004.  Underpinning both gatherings was his understanding that we are ‘the Church of the baptised’ and that all need to be listened to if we are to discern by consensus where the Spirit is calling.  Personally, I was privileged to work closely with Fr Francis while Director of the Marriage Tribunal and in various consultative capacities. I last visited him mid-January.  He held my hand while watching the cricket on tv – he enjoyed sports and had a particular love for Aussie Rules - communicating somewhat by a nod, a smile or the movement of his eyes.  Then for some twenty minutes we were present in silence as he intermittently dozed.  Silence, where the Spirt is allowed free rein.  Silence, where we were present not doing or saying, still as new life beckoned.  After liturgical gatherings early next week at St Brendan’s, Ganmain and St Michael’s Cathedral, Wagga, a Pontifical Funeral Mass for Archbishop Francis will be held at St Christopher’s Cathedral, 11am, this Thursday, 20 March, followed by internment in the crypt.

Reflection

If not us,

Who?

If not here,

Where?

If not now,

When?

If not for

The Kingdom,

Why?

Dare the dream.
