OUR ROLE IS VITAL

Da’Vine Joy Randolph won this year’s Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her role in ‘The Holdovers’.  It is an engaging movie that I would highly recommend.  Of late our Gospel readings have been prefaced with reference to ‘supporting roles’; Nicodemus two weeks and ago and ‘some Greeks’ last week. I would suggest that today’s reading of the Passion presents another, the Centurion who, having witnessed the death of Jesus, make his profession of faith.  Our Gospel reading before the blessing of the palms from Mark (11:1-10) records Jesus entering Jerusalem on a donkey.  He thereby indicates that he is here to serve not be served, giving his life for many as the events of the coming week will illustrate.  Our First Reading from the third of Isaiah’s ‘Servant Songs’ conflates the sufferings of the prophet and that of the people in Exile with the Church’s understanding of the passion and death of Jesus. Our Second Reading from Philippians is a reflection on the person of Jesus offering further insight that “behind every word, gesture and suffering is a costly divine outreach of love to an alienated world” (Brendan Byrne).  In Jesus God enters into our suffering.  “We know why this is allowed to happen: because this is the kind of ‘service’ that God willed the Messiah to perform: To enter into the sinfulness, pain and suffering of the world, to overcome those things from within, to give his life that the ‘many’ might have life (cf. 10:45; 14:24) (ibid).  Betrayl, abandonment, suffering and death are not the last word, as “the moment Jesus dies the temple curtain splits in two.  God is no longer shut in the Holy of Holies of the temple, inaccessible to all save the high priest.  God is here, in this most unholy place of execution, reaching out in reconciliation to the whole world.  The Gentile centurion, standing in for all of us, is the first to grasp this and make his act of faith” (ibid).   Lord, might our journey through Holy Week and Easter allow each of us to encounter your love anew.  Help us to understand that there is nothing in our experiences – joy or sorrow – where you are not present and seeking a response.   With the Centurion, might we be a channel of your reconciling love.  We are not the focus but our role is vital.

If not us,

Who?

If not here,

Where?

If not now,

When?

If not for

The Kingdom,

Why?

Dare the dream.
